What is an HSA?
A Health Savings Account (HSA) is a tax-advantaged savings account available to individuals enrolled in a qualified High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). It allows participants to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for qualified medical expenses such as doctor visits, prescriptions, dental care, and more. Unlike Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), HSAs are owned by the individual, are fully portable, and never expire — any unused funds roll over year to year and can be invested to grow savings over time.
The Difference Between an HSA & FSA
Both HSAs and FSAs help employees save money on eligible healthcare expenses by using pre-tax dollars, but they differ in key ways. They cannot be used together, unless your FSA is a Limited Purpose FSA.
